H & R Farms was formed in 1991 when Lawrence and Melba Harden and their daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Charles Ramey, bought their first trio of rheas. Farming is not foreign to this family. Their family comes from a long line of row crop farmers. The Hardens have grown everything from fruits and vegetables to cows, hogs and chickens. Currently we raise about 1600 acres of cotton, and 300 acres of soybeans, 7 breeder pair of emus, and 19 rheas.
H & R Farms has fresh eggs almost year around. They get emu eggs in the fall and winter starting in October with some of their emus laying into April and May. The rheas start laying in the spring around March or April and will lay until August or September. Their emus usually lay 40+ eggs each, with one female emu named Queen B that lays into the 60's. They also have another emu named Jane that occasionally lays the rare double yoke emu egg. Their rheas lay 40+ eggs each.
Lawrence and Melba turned the daily operation of the bird farm over to Charles and Stephanie in 1998. They actively help out with the birds whenever an extra hand is needed, but growing 1900 acres of row crop takes up most of their time.
In 1998, Stephanie started looking for a way to market and sell their extra emu and rhea egg shells and also sell emu oil products. She got the idea of painting the eggs herself when she saw Lin Wellford's books of painting on rocks. Some of the current Egg Critters are designs that Lin has covered. Other Egg Critters on this site are custom works that Stephanie has designed, and they have become so popular that we carry them on a regular basis. Stephanie has since attend many craft shows to market her decorated eggs and emu oil products. She also has turned to the internet to sell her blown egg shells, painted eggs, and farm direct emu oil products. This web site has been a couple of years in the making. EggCrazy.com was finally launched August 2004.
Charles and Stephanie Ramey joined the American Emu Association and the Tennessee Emu Association in 1992. They have both been very active members of the Tennessee Emu Association, with one of them serving on the board every year since they first joined. Charles is the current President of the American Emu Association. Stephanie is a member of the International Egg Art Guild (IEAG).
The emu oil that H & R Farms sells is creamy and all natural. It carries the American Oil Chemists Society certification as recognized by the American Emu Association. Many of the eggers who have purchased their blown emu and rhea eggs, have commented that they are the cleanest eggs around. They offer 1st and 2nd quality egg shells to choose from.
